The first session (including intake and acupuncture)
On your first visit you will be asked in detail about your main medical complaints, symptoms, general health, lifestyle and medical history. Your pulse is taken and tongue examined. This information is then used to formulate a diagnosis and treatment plan.
You will receive an acupuncture treatment. Acupuncture needles are very fine needles unlike conventional syringe or hypodermic needles. Sterile, one-time disposable, high quality needles are used to ensure smooth and mostly painless insertion and absolute hygiene.
During the treatment you may start to feel very relaxed or even fall asleep which is very common and conducive to healing. And you may feel numbness, heaviness or distending sensation, which is called “De Qi” sensation and means that energy is moving effectively. After a treatment, patients often claim to feel rejuvenated and to have had a deep sense of relaxation.
In total the whole session takes about one and a half hour.
Follow up sessions
These usually last 45 minutes to an hour, beginning with an update on the current health situation, diagnosis by pulse and tongue and then needling. Moreover, there will be a discussion of a treatment plan and if applicable herbal recommendations plus dietary and lifestyle advice.
There can be an indication of how many treatment sessions you are likely to need. This can vary depending on the type and duration of illness. Generally a recent illness or injury will resolve fairly quickly whilst a longstanding condition will need more treatments.
